Nigeria @64: NYCN advocates prioritizing engagement, empowerment of youth for national dev’t

… Advises youth to be patriotic, optimistic to overcome challenges facing Nigeria

In celebration of Nigeria’s 64th independence, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has advised Nigerians, especially the youth, to contribute their quotas to national development by supporting leaders to overcome challenges faced by the country.

In a statement made available to New National Star in Abuja, Tuesday morning, signed by the President of NYCN, Amb. Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, the council said it is essential for all citizens, especially the youth, to embody a spirit of patriotism, adding that each person has a role to play in supporting our leaders and contributing to national development.

The statement read: “As Nigeria commemorates its 64th Independence Day, we take this moment to reflect on our nation’s journey, the challenges we have faced, and the vast potential that lies ahead. Nigeria is indeed a blessed nation, rich in diversity with its many tribes, languages, and cultures. This vibrant mosaic is not only a hallmark of our identity but also a powerful resource that can be harnessed for national development and unity.

“Throughout our history, Nigeria has navigated numerous trials and tribulations, similar to many other nations around the world. From our struggle for independence to the complex societal issues we face today, we have endured significant challenges. While we find ourselves in a difficult period, it is crucial to maintain a sense of optimism. Despite the obstacles, we have made meaningful strides, and with continued effort and collaboration, a brighter future for Nigeria is within our reach.

“One of Nigeria’s most significant assets is its youthful population. Our country is blessed with abundant natural resources and a demographic dividend that positions us strategically on the global stage. With the right leadership and vision, Nigeria possesses everything necessary to compete effectively with other nations.

“The energy, creativity, and innovation of our youth are vital in driving progress and stimulating economic growth. As we celebrate our independence, it is essential to acknowledge that the future of Nigeria rests on the shoulders of its young people.

“However, the challenges we encounter are closely tied to issues of leadership. The National Youth Council of Nigeria emphasizes that effective leadership is crucial for the management and utilization of our natural and human resources. It is imperative for leaders at all levels to approach their roles with integrity, transparency, and a commitment to justice. Only through honest and equitable governance can Nigeria hope to rise and take its rightful place among the global community.

“To realize this ambitious vision, we must prioritize the engagement and empowerment of our youth. Active involvement in nation-building allows young people to contribute meaningfully to society. They represent the driving force behind the transformative changes we seek. Investing in their education, providing opportunities for skill development, and creating an environment that encourages entrepreneurship and innovation are essential steps forward.

“As we honor our past leaders and the countless citizens who have sacrificed for the peace and unity of our nation, we must also recognize the role of every Nigerian in shaping our collective destiny. Their dedication has paved the way for the progress we enjoy today, and we owe it to them to continue striving for a nation that reflects our shared values and aspirations.

“On our path to national development, it is vital to foster unity and understanding among our diverse communities. Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, and promoting inclusivity and respect for all cultural backgrounds is crucial. By embracing our differences, we can cultivate a more cohesive society that works together towards common goals.”

He added: “As we celebrate Nigeria at 64, it is essential for all citizens, especially the youth, to embody a spirit of patriotism. Each person has a role to play in supporting our leaders and contributing to national development. From engaging in community service to advocating for positive change, every effort counts. Our collective action can create a ripple effect that transforms society for the better.

“We should keep in mind that the challenges we encounter are not impossible to overcome. With resilience and determination, we can tackle these obstacles and create a prosperous Nigeria. When managed wisely, our natural resources have the potential to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for all citizens.

“To harness this potential effectively, it is crucial that agencies influencing Nigerians—such as the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)—are closely monitored by relevant authorities. This oversight will ensure they fulfill their duties responsibly and without corruption.

“Adopting sustainable practices is essential to protect our environment and ensure that future generations can also benefit from these resources.

“In conclusion, as we mark 64 years of independence, let us reflect on our journey, recognize our challenges, and commit to a united and prosperous Nigeria. The future of our nation depends on the actions we take today. We must care for our country, value its diversity, and work together toward a brighter future.

“Nigeria is all we have, and it is our responsibility to ensure its success. Together, let us strive to build a nation we can all be proud of—a nation where peace, justice, and opportunity flourish for every citizen. The time for action is now; let us rise to the occasion and create the Nigeria we envision for ourselves and future generations.”
