Okafor Chidinma Modupe, an English Education graduate from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State, recently finished a 72-hour crocheting marathon with the goal of breaking the Guinness World Record. She said that there were a lot of things that could have prevented her from completing the task, making it challenging for her to achieve.
In an interview with journalists regarding her attempt to break the Guinness World Records in the sport of crocheting, she said that she faced numerous obstacles before starting the 72-hour crocheting marathon that took place in Lagos State on December 24–27, 2023.
She described the difficulties as follows: “I had a lot of hurdles, like persuading people to believe in you.
Before they can assist someone, the majority of individuals in today’s world feel that one should have achieved fame, recognition, a name, or a status.
Talking further about a setback, she said she was surprised to learn that a previous location deal for the Guinness World Records event had been revoked and that she would now need to pay N800,000 every day to host the competition.
She did, however, thank the Goge Africa team for stepping in and encouraging her to continue her goal to bring Nigeria to the attention of the world as she was attempting to beat the Guinness World Record held by American Alexander Hayden, who crocheted in 34 hours and 7 minutes.
In response, the CEO of the 6Chi Crocheting brand begs parents to let their children express themselves in ways other than scholastic ones.
“Parents out there should observe your child and let them explore their skills,” the speaker said. It’s not just about, you know, doing what you see your kids doing, or giving them space to express themselves, listening to their desires, and supporting them in realizing their dreams.
Attending school is beneficial as it enhances your abilities. Going to school is beneficial because it will enable you to explore more opportunities in your line of work. However, no matter what skill you possess, don’t look down on it; instead, support your child in developing it, identify it early in life, and assist them in growing in it.
As she awaits the GWR’s evaluation and official announcement of their decision, she pledged to continue promoting Nigerian and African crocheting crafts.
She says that it doesn’t matter if you have the money before you start; it all depends on your zeal.
I shall be exhibiting the pinnacles of creativity because everyone possesses these abilities. People would be creating more job possibilities and could achieve great things with their crafts if we as people realized what we had in us, she continued.
