NIMASA accredits 27 shipyards un Rivers, Delta

  • by

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has accredited 27 shipyards nationwide as part of efforts to strengthen regulation and promote global best practices in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

According to the agency’s Deputy Director and Head of Public Relations, Osagie Edward, the accredited facilities include 10 in Lagos State, eight in Rivers State, and nine in Delta State.

The exercise, in line with Section 22 of the NIMASA Act, 2007, empowers the agency to regulate, inspect, and license shipyard operations in Nigeria.

NIMASA said that vessels constructed in the approved facilities will now receive a Keel Identification Number (KIN), making them eligible for International Maritime Organisation (IMO) recognition.

The Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, described the accreditation as part of a broader campaign to ensure shipyards meet global safety and environmental standards.

“Our focus is to build investor confidence, protect maritime assets, and promote transparency in ship repair and construction,” Mobereola said.

Nigeria’s shipbuilding industry, once vibrant, has faced decades of decline and under-utilisation. Experts say the new accreditation could revive local capacity and attract foreign investment to the sector.
