NiMet — November thunderstorms and rain brought on by climatic variability

According to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), natural and atmospheric factors contribute to climatic variability, which is why several states saw rain and thunderstorms in November.

The Agency provided the justification in a statement made accessible to journalists on Monday, pointing out that the northern Nigerian rainy season of 2023 has ended as previously anticipated.

The country’s Northwestern and North Central regions had a build-up of clouds, and on Saturday, November 25, and Sunday, November 26, thunderstorms were caused by FCT.

“NiMET clarified that the development is based on fluctuations based on temporary weather modulators, rather than changing the season as predicted,” the statement reads.

In addition, the Meteorological Agency noted that “it is not exclusive to Nigeria” and that “moisture influx and high energy in the atmosphere resulted in condensation and cloud formation.”

It also noted that human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, have recently led to an increase in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, “which is causing changes in the Earth’s climate, a phenomenon commonly referred to as climate change.”
