Obasanjo supports Kenya’s opposition leader to be African Union’s next head.

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, has supported Raila Odinga in his bid to lead the African Union Commission.

Speaking to the media in Nairobi with Raila, Obasanjo expressed his confidence that the opposition leader from Kenya, if backed by the East African area, could win the seat.

He declared, “I have no doubt that my friend is a viable candidate, subject to the opinions, sentiments, positions, and statements made by our leaders in the sub-region of East Africa.”

Moussa Faki Mahamat, the current chair, is scheduled to retire in March of the following year.

The Special Envoy of the African Union, Obasanjo, said he thought East Africa should have the opportunity to fill the role.

“We had Southern Africa not so long ago, and Central Africa is currently filling the seat. We had West Africa before that,” he clarified.

He stated that Raila ought to run as an East African regional candidate rather than for his own nation.

“That is how it should be if the region can unite and support the candidate,” he continued.
