A petrol tanker explosion in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, has killed one person and destroyed at least six shops.

The incident occurred on Friday night when the tanker collided with a car and a tricycle, spilling its contents and triggering a massive blaze near the Ekwusigo LGA Secretariat.

Witnesses said the explosion was immediate and intense, engulfing nearby shops and leaving several tricycle passengers with severe burns.

Emergency responders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, diverted traffic while firefighters battled the inferno.

Confirming the incident, Head of Media and Publicity, Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, said three fire trucks were deployed following a 17:45hrs distress call.

“Sadly, one life was lost and six shops were affected,” he said. “Our firefighters prevented further spread and minimised damage.”

The incident adds to a string of fire outbreaks recorded recently across Anambra State.
