Oyo Obas In Soup Over Sale Of Land To Rogue Herdsmen

Some traditional rulers in the South – West, particularly in Oyo State risk losing their royal thrones and going to correctional centers following their alleged complicity in the sale and allocation of land in their domain to herdsmen, especially aliens.

New National Star investigations reveal that the alleged complicity of the traditional rulers may have accounted for the cautious reaction of the Oyo State Government to the activities of rogue herdsmen in the Okeogun and Ibarapa areas of the state.

Sources revealed that the Chairman of Oyo state Security Network codenamed Operation Amotekun, General Ajibola Kunle Togun, first drew the attention of the state government to the development. Some traditional rulers were alleged to have given ‘To-Whom- ItMay-Concern letters to some alien herdsmen to allow them sail through immigration and security checks and also sold lands to some of them to settle in their domains.

“Some of them made millions from these bandits who would later become their nemeses,” a source close to the Oyo State Government told our correspondent. “We are looking deeply into the issues and whoever is found wanting among them will be dealt with. We already have evidence of To-Whom-It-May-Concern Letters given out by these traditional rulers,” the source added.

Already, the government had mandated General Togun to get to the root of the matter promising to implement his findings. The sale of land to alien herdsmen is not by any means limited to Oyo state. Investigations revealed that many Obas in the South – West are also involved in the sale of land to foreigners and even questionable characters without making the necessary background checks. On February 14, 2020, the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi had a disagreement with the Agbowu of Ogbaagbaa, Oba Dhikrulahi Akinropo during a peace meeting convened by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11.

Oluwo told newsmen that he was only fighting against corrupt practices of some traditional rulers in the Iwo Kingdom who he accused of selling lands within their domains indiscriminately and grabbing lands belonging to poor farmers. Some Fulani men were also cited in Ajowa Akoko some months ago who claimed that some indigenes of the town sold a large expanse of land to them in the town.

Contacted for comments on the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the Oyo state governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, said he was aware of the issue and that the Chairman of Amotekun, General Togun, was the appropriate person to comment on the issue. Efforts to speak with Gen. Togun proved abortive as of the time of going to press.
