Police, ECAPI Partner To Strengthen Accountability In Abia

By Victoria Yakubu

The Abia State Police Command has partnered with the Eagle Crime Awareness and Prevention Initiative (ECAPI) to strengthen police accountability, improve complaint handling and build public trust.

The partnership was discussed on Monday when the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, received an ECAPI delegation led by its South-East Zonal Coordinator, Mr Hillary Nwaogu, at the command headquarters in Umuahia.

In a statement issued on Monday, the command said the visit aimed to extend to the state the existing partnership between ECAPI and the Complaints Response Unit (CRU) at the Force Headquarters.

The collaboration is expected to promote public awareness, encourage engagement between the police and residents, and improve the handling of complaints against police officers.

During the meeting, Nwaogu introduced the initiative and explained its objectives, expressing ECAPI’s readiness to support the command’s Complaints Response Unit in promoting accountability and effective complaint management.

He said the initiative was committed to supporting efforts to make the police more responsive to the concerns of members of the public.

Responding, Afolabi welcomed the delegation and commended ECAPI for its efforts in crime awareness and prevention.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to the Inspector-General of Police’s vision of promoting accountability, professionalism, intelligence-led policing and community policing.

He stressed that feedback from residents was essential to improving police operations and ensuring that officers responded effectively to public concerns.

Afolabi said the command welcomed constructive feedback from members of the public, noting that such input could improve service delivery, strengthen accountability and promote responsive policing.

He assured the delegation that the command was ready to work with ECAPI to improve public confidence in the police and support efforts to make Abia State safer.

The commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to working with ECAPI to strengthen accountability, encourage public participation and build trust between the police and the communities they serve.
