Julius Abure, the national chairman of the Labour Party, was freed by the police after being detained on Wednesday in the capital of Edo State, Benin City.
Abure was detained in response to a petition alleging attempted murder and conspiracy to cause serious injury, according to the Police.
Abure was also charged by the police with unlawful gun possession.
“No struggle to liberate a country comes easy,” Abure stated in a statement upon his release. As has happened to me and my other colleagues since the general election, many nations across the world where freedom fighters have battled for the liberation of their people experience injustice and punishment.
They attempted to sow discord inside the party following the general election by leveling unfounded charges against us. When that didn’t work, they came with embezzlement, and now they are talking about forgeries.
“Anyone who feels wronged within the party goes and starts agitating and writing petitions.” The irony is that, despite taking action, the police will ultimately discover that the claims they made were untrue.
We were setting up for the primaries yesterday when, of course, the cops barged in and arrested us for something I wouldn’t want to talk about right now since an investigation is ongoing and I don’t want to start it before they’re finished.
He then on, “But I must say unequivocally that after multiple interventions, they have kindly released me on bail.”
