The National President of Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Tasiu Wudil, has decried infiltration of the engineering profession with quacks at construction sites and called on states to have development control to be headed by the right Engineers to monitor projects in the state.
The NSE president, who stated this while on a two day working visit to the state and made a stopover at site of the collapsed four storey building in Uyo on Thursday, expressed regret over situation where rules of building are not followed and called for development control policy by states.
According to him, “It is regrettable that when you go to a project site, everybody claims to be an engineer. We have these issues, that is why the COREN President invited all the professional bodies in the field for a meeting on the issues of building collapse. We identified that so many states in the country do not even have development control, why some have but are not headed by the right engineers. Even when they are headed by the engineers, their drawings and designs are not vetted by the right professionals.
“We came up with a solution from that treaty and COREN has put it forward that the PRM in every location, once they are ready to go for inspection, will also go with monitoring group of all professional bodies in the building construction industry.”
