In order to avert incidences of flooding, the Osun State government has warned residents in the State against indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
The General Manager, Osun Waste Management Agency, OWMA, Sanitarian Fatai Oladosu Oyewole, gave this warning on Friday while fielding questions from newsmen in his office to enlighten the people of the state on the need to desist from the negative habit which is one of the major causes of flooding.
Sanitarian Oyewole noted that the rains had already started, and the state government viewed the risk of flooding as a major concern, adding that residents have a responsibility to protect their environment by desisting from throwing their waste in roadside gutters.
The OWMA GM, said Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s led administration is committed to a clean, hygienic and flood-free environment and therefore, would not tolerate any violation of the state’s environmental law.
“The state government is doing everything possible for every citizen in the state in order to have a conducive environment by constructing and reconstructing drainages at eliminating flooding in the state.
“No person should burn their refuse in or around any premise as it’s inimical to human health while it is important they partner with accredited PSP waste contractor allocated to their area at a fee and get a necessary receipt from them as all hands are on deck to make waste management receipt a utility bill.
“The public is enjoined to report any waste contractor who failed to deliver as expected from them to the Agency at old Boorepo building ring road Osogbo, and for any illegal dump, public should report same at the nearest local government water and environmental sanitation department.
” Am using this medium to appreciate the Excellency the Governor of the state for making environmental sustainability a priority through his Hon Commissioner and Special Adviser on environment and Sanitation Hon Sola Oladepo And Hon Rufus Oyegbile.
“The state government would continue to checkmate the unwholesome attitude of some people in the state as those apprehended would be made to face legal action” the GM stated.
While highlighting the importance of maintaining a clean environment, Sanitarian Oyewole maintained that, a clean environment would engender a healthy atmosphere and check epidemics.
The OWMA GM, who enjoined all the market men and women in the state as well as entire residents to always cultivate the habit of having a good environment for their betterment congratulated the newly Local Government Caretaker Chairmen and their Executives in the state.
While wishing the new local government leadership good tenure in office, the OWMA GM admonished them to endeavour in securing a befitting land for dump site and public cemetery to safeguard public health and serve as a means of generating internally generated revenue.
