A new set of facilities have been commissioned at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) including a trauma centre, a physical therapy and rehabilitation centre and a new outpatient department on Thursday. These projects were facilitated by the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).
Dr. Ehanire Osagie, the minister of health, who was there for the commissioning of these projects praised the UMTH for their dedication towards providing quality health care and appreciated the contributions of the ICRC to the medical affairs of the hospital.
“As a leading federal health institution in the northeast zone and a centre of excellence in infectious diseases in Nigeria, the University of Maiduguri has grown into a focal point for quality health care in various medical and surgical specialities,” he said.
He added that the need for a trauma centre in the region has grown due to civil unrest and the physical rehabilitation centre would ensure patients get ‘one-stop-shop service’ at the UMTH.
A National Health Insurance Scheme complex was also commissioned. Other projects are in construction including the Child Institute, the kidney centre extension, a burns centre and a radiotherapy centre.
