Meet the former Cynosure FC Okon Saturday with speedy right-footed striker who recently joined Sporting Lagos. he played for Nilayo from 2019 to 2021 and Cynosure from 2021 to 2022, where he played a part in the club’s FA Cup success
he spoke with New National Star Newspaper Esther Egbe recently about how he got into football and more.
Can we meet you?
My name is Okon Saturday.I am from Akwa Ibom State. We are three siblings. I have an elder brother and a sister and I am the last born. I grow up in Lagos State and I started football at the age of seven old,my parents are in support of my chosen career.
Tell me where you started from?
I started from my childhood club called Young Striker in Tolu Complex,Ajegunle City in Lagos .
How did you get to Sporting Lagos?
Since the frist season sporting Lagos was found. I wanted to play for the team cause there have a good facility.I come for trial last 2 season. the coach didn’t pick me. I went to Cynosure that same season and play against them . the coach invited me to come.
I am thankful to my maneger Mr Elvis.
How does it feel to be a Hero at Naija ?
I feel very happy because, I wanted to promote my team Sporting Lagos to NPFL which I did.I am very grateful to God almighty for making history with my teammates .
My major goal as a new player for Sporting was to become the highest goal scorer in NNL,but that never happened.
But winning the Hero of the match against my State team Akwa United was like winning my highest goal scorer I target in the NNL.
How do you feel about your new team winning the Naija Super 8?
I feel very happy,because the competition was played in our home ground and our fans believe in us . They wanted us to win the cup and we won at the end.
What is your greatest football achievement?
I have a lot, but winning the Hero of the match against Akwa United and beating Remo Stars twice, winning the cup was more than enough for me and my teammates.
What are your football strengths and weaknesses?
My strength is when I give my all for my team. I don’t have any weakness.
How do you handle football-related injuries?
I don’t know how it feel and I don’t pray for any. I have never been out with injury for two weeks .It just minor pain after relaxing I will be fine.
What do you think it takes to be a successful football player?
By dedication ,hard work ,focus and prayer.
What do you like most about playing football?
when I score goals, because my fans always want me to. I love to make my fans happy by doing it with joy.
What do you think makes you a good football player?
Self confidence is very important as a player.
What is your top priority for the season?
My targets NPFL top scorer for the season and join the national team.
