Sokoto: Medical Director Lauds Support For Neuropsychiatric Hospital

The Medical Director of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Kware, Sokoto State Dr. Shehu Sale has lauded the Governor of Sokoto State, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Minister of State for Health, Senator Wamakko and other philanthropists for their support with a view to making it rank among the best in Nigeria.

Sale stated this recently while fielding questions from our correspondents in his office, adding that the hospital has being upgraded to high standards through the support of the Federal Ministry of Health, Sokoto State Governor and other individuals. “You see before I took over, the service were very scanty but within the last three and half years we have improved greatly and remarkably.

We were able to computerize our finance system in the account and this is very important because it minimised wastage and other sharp practices in the account,” he added. He pointed out that the Hospital Management has received vehicles and ambulances, medical equipment from the state government as well as public spirited individuals geared towards the establishment of NHIS clinic so that the hospital will in addition to psychiatric services provide other services. The Medical Director who also emphasised on the achievements recorded so far noted out that the hospital has equipment that are needed to provide psychiatric services mainly electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)machine, while acquired electroencephalography (EEG) machines and others needed for our services. “In addition, the family clinic (NHIS Clinic) they also have all the equipment required in a standard operation theatre.

Other equipments for our diagnostic centre such as ultrasound scan machine, Xray machine and computerized Tomography Scan (CT- Scan) machine are all on their way,” he said. He added that all necessary arrangements had been concluded by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Health for the purchase of a CT – Scan machine for the hospital and others. Dr. Shehu Sale, recalled that the Hospital was once state owned but later took over in the 1980s by the Federal Government adding that it was established under Military Government by a decree in 1988.

He said that the mandate of the Hospital is the same with other serving Federal Psychiatric Hospital in the country. “There are eight of them, two in North-West, one each in Sokoto and Kaduna states for provision of mental health care services, research and training of health care providers and all these mandates have been carried out effectively by the Hospital,” he said.

“When I took over the leadership of this hospital in June 2017 the staff strength was very small about five hundred 500 and now we have about seven hundred 700 staff strength within these three years” he added.
