Nigeria’s telecommunications subscriptions teledensity percentage has dropped for the fourth month to 102.72 per cent. Teledensity is calculated based on a population estimate of 190 million, up from 140 million.
The drop which initially started in November 2020 has continued through December 2020 and January and February 2021.

According to statistics recently released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), teledensity for February was 102.72 per cent with 196.078 million subscriptions.
In October 2020, the number of subscriptions was up to 207.907 million and by December 2020 it was down to 204.522 million.
The telecoms industry is one of the biggest in the country. In the first quarter of the 2020, the sector , according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), contributed 10.88 per cent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
At the International Telecommunications Union in 2019, Minister of Communications said that the ICT will contribute more that the Oil and Gas sector to the nation’s GDP in a space of two years. With the teledensity on constant decline, doubts are being cast on that promise.
