William Troost-Ekong, the captain of Nigeria, has stated that the Super Eagles team does not have a superstar.
He claimed that the squad’s great sense of solidarity is the reason the Super Eagles are vying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, or AFCON, championship.
He added that the team’s success might be attributed to the young, gifted players who have something to prove.
The oldest member of Jose Peseiro’s PAOK squad in the current competition is Ekong.
Nine Super Eagles competing players are affiliated with the top five European League teams.
“I believe that we are all currently playing for respectable teams in the leagues, with a few on better teams than others, but we are all young and eager to prove ourselves, and that’s probably what makes us a good team,” he said in an interview with Hot Sports.
We are all in this together, and I don’t think anyone gave much thought to whose club they played for once they got to the camp. There is true brotherhood there. It’s helping us perform well.
“We don’t have any superstars on our team; I believe that in previous eras, Nigeria had a lot of players on large teams.
“As beneficial as that has been for the team, it may have also been challenging because of conflicting agendas, a variety of players, and disparate mentalities to consider.”
