Gunmen kill cop, set Police station, Civic Centre ablaze in Anambra

A police officer lost his life during a gun duel between joint security operatives and gunmen in Oba, Anambra State.
Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga in a statement on Tuesday said the deceased, a corporal died when the hoodlums suspected to be armed successionist group shot sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the Police Station.
He said they threw petrol bombs at the security facility which made some of the offices catch up with fire, including the Oba Civic Center.
He however said the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam had vowed to bring those behind the unholy act to book.
He said, “The Police-led Joint Security Force comprising of the Army, Navy, Civil defence and other security agencies are currently in a joint on-slaught operation within Oba and its environments. Following, an attack in the early hours of today 3/9/2024 on Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and Oba Civic Center.
“The suspected armed successionist group started shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the Police Station and threw petrol bombs at the security facility which made some of the offices catch up with fire including the Oba Civic Center.
“Unfortunately, a police corporal who was fatally wounded paid the supreme price, while the fire was put off with the help of other Police officers on duty and the Joint Security responding team.
“The Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, while condemning the act, described the invasion of Security facilities and hostility towards security agents as an attack on the soul of a Nation and vows to bring those behind the unholy act to book.”

Ogun Varsity Rusticates 31 Students, Suspends 47 Others For Various Offences
Authorities of the Ogun State-owned Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode have announced the rustication of 31 students and an indefinite suspension of 47 others for various forms of academic and behavioural misconduct.
This was contained in a statement issued by the institution’s Registrar, Dapo Oke on Tuesday.
Among those sanctioned is Ojo Michael, a 200-level student in the Computer Science Department, who was rusticated for the entire 2023/2024 academic session.
It was gathered that this decision was taken during the university’s Senate meeting held on July 31, 2024.
The statement further stated that Michael was found guilty of forging his Cumulative Grade Point Average in a bid to fraudulently qualify for the Student Union elections.
In addition to Ojo Michael, 17 other students were rusticated for examination malpractice, while five were sanctioned for making threats to life, and one other for fraudulent activities.
The statement also read that the university’s Examination Malpractice and Students’ Disciplinary Committee, after thorough investigations, recommended the penalties.
The university has further suspended 47 students indefinitely for various forms of misconduct, including impersonation.
The Senate emphasised that the affected students are required to stay off-campus to avoid potential confrontations with university security personnel.
The school authorities reiterated their commitment to upholding academic discipline and integrity, warning that any student found guilty of misconduct would face severe consequences in line with the institution’s rules and regulations.
“The Senate, at its Statutory meeting of 31st July 2024 has approved that Ojo Micheal, a 200-level student in the Computer Science Department be rusticated for the 2023/2024 Academic session for forgery of CGPA to contest Student Union Elections.
“17 other students got rusticated for examination malpractice, 5 for threat to life and 1 other for fraudulent act.
“47 students were found guilty of misconduct and were thus given indefinite suspension and another ten for impersonation.
“Other various punishments were also meted out for various misconducts as recommended by the Examination Malpractice and Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
“The affected students have been advised in their interest to stay off the Campus to avoid being embarrassed by the University Security Personnel.”

19-year-old Edo native doctor nabbed for alleged murder
The Edo State Police Command on Monday said it had arrested a 19-year-old self-acclaimed native doctor over the death of his client.
The native doctor, who specialises in preparing charms against the effect of gunshots and cutlass attacks, killed his client while trying to prove the efficacy of a charm he prepared for the deceased
The incident occurred at Onumu Community, in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State on August 20.
A statement by the state police command spokesman, Moses Yamu, the victim, Alex Ezekiel, approached the suspect and requested the bulletproof charm.
“One Alex Ezekiel, ‘m’, now deceased, went to the “native doctor” to get the charm prepared for him.
“After preparing the charms, the native doctor tried to test the efficacy of the charm by shooting the deceased with a gun.
“Unfortunately, the deceased sustained fatal injuries, and was rushed to Ifejola Hospital, Igarra, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor,” the statement said.
Yamu said the suspect would face prosecution as soon as an investigation is concluded.
