….How faith, creativity, and turntables are transforming Nigeria’s soundscape
By Kingsley Ngene (DJ Drexx)
In Nigeria’s ever, evolving entertainment landscape, a fresh rhythm is taking over, and it carries the unmistakable pulse of gospel music. No longer confined to choirs or live bands, gospel sounds are now being amplified by a new generation of entertainers: gospel DJs. From weddings to conferences, from youth concerts to viral social media trends, gospel DJs have moved from the sidelines to the spotlight, and nowhere is this movement more vibrant than in Abuja, where demand has skyrocketed.
From Margins to Mainstream
Two decades ago, gospel DJs were almost unheard of. Church worship was dominated by live choirs and instrumentalists, leaving little room for turntables. At the time, the image of a DJ was tied to nightclubs, parties, and secular music ,a world seemingly distant from the pulpit.

That perception began to shift when a few courageous pioneers challenged the norm. They proved that DJing could be more than entertainment, it could be ministry.
DJ Gosporella redefined what it meant to be a DJ of faith, showing that spirituality and skill could coexist on the same stage. Through his influence, a new generation emerged, one that saw the DJ booth not as a party station but as a pulpit of rhythm. Today, gospel DJs like DJ Ernesty, Penny, and DJ Drexx curate not just playlists but spiritual experiences, bridging sacred and social spaces across Nigeria’s capital.

The Law and the Challenge
Despite this momentum, challenges persist. The recent law requiring DJs in Nigeria to obtain licenses before performing publicly has sparked debate within the industry.
While the regulation aims to protect artists’ rights, it also presents a burden, especially for gospel DJs who often serve fellowships, youth groups, and small churches with limited budgets.
For some, the development is a call to professionalize and organize; for others, it feels like a barrier to ministry. Yet the community’s resilience remains strong.
Gospel DJs are learning about copyright, collaborating with labels, and adapting to new realities ,all while ensuring the gospel continues to reach hearts through sound.
Gospel Weddings, Concerts, and Social Media Energy
Across Nigeria, gospel DJs are redefining what celebration sounds like. Weddings, concerts, and conventions now pulse with joy and spiritual intensity. A memorable moment was the wedding of gospel artist Prinx Emmanuel, where DJ Manny transformed the atmosphere with a seamless blend of worship and excitement.
On social media, the wave continues. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram have become powerful tools for gospel DJs. Remixes of hits by Prinx Emmanuel, Greatman Takit, and Victor Thompson dominate feeds, capturing young audiences who crave both faith and fun.
Through this, gospel DJs have evolved into cultural influencers, pushing gospel music into mainstream conversations.
The Role of Churches and Organizations
Churches and Christian movements have been central to this transformation. DJs such as DJ Ernesty and Holoskey at COZA Abuja, and DJ Drexx at ATC and Savannah Grace, are redefining how worship feels in contemporary spaces.
By blending sound, rhythm, and faith, these DJs turn worship into an immersive experience. Their affiliations with faith, based groups lend legitimacy and structure ,ensuring gospel DJing remains both a calling and a career.
The Kingdom DJs of Nigeria (KDN)
At the heart of this movement lies the Kingdom DJs of Nigeria (KDN) ,a collective of about 45 gospel DJs united by vision, faith, and excellence.
KDN provides mentorship, organizes summits, and grooms younger talents, ensuring gospel deejaying isn’t a fleeting trend but a sustainable creative industry.
Its focus on collaboration, growth, and moral grounding has made it the backbone of Nigeria’s gospel DJ community ,a symbol of unity in diversity.
Looking Ahead: The Future is Gospel
With the explosion of contemporary gospel music, the rise of a digital, first generation, and the relentless drive of passionate DJs, the future looks bright.
Abuja remains the epicenter of this revolution, where gospel DJs are mastering technology, AI,assisted mixing, and virtual events to reach global audiences.
“We’re not just playing songs,” says DJ D’Mo. “We’re shaping culture, spreading the gospel, and creating joy. The turntables are our ministry.”
This fusion of innovation and inspiration is redefining how young Nigerians engage with faith through music.
A New Sound, A New Era
The unstoppable rise of gospel DJs in Nigeria is more than an entertainment story ,it’s a movement. It speaks of a generation unashamed of their faith, unafraid to innovate, and unwilling to separate spirituality from creativity.
From youth fellowships in Abuja to online audiences across continents, gospel DJs are proving that music can move both the body and the soul.
Their turntables spin more than melodies ,they spin hope, purpose, and revival. They remind us that worship can be loud, modern, and joyful ,yet deeply meaningful.
And as the rhythm of gospel continues to rise across Nigeria, one truth rings louder than any bass drop:
The gospel is dancing again ,and this time, the turntables are leading the praise.
