A vehicle conveying vegetables, tomatoes and other perishable foodstuff was on Monday morning set ablaze by yet to be identified hoodlums in Enugu while the Monday Sit-At-Home was ongoing.
No person has been arrested in connection to the incident but the attacker’s witnesses said might be enforcing the prevailing sit-at-home order of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB to demand the release of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from DSS custody.
The incident happened at Edem Junction, Ibeagwa, Nike in Enugu East Local Government Area of the state.
No lives were lost in the incident.
The vehicle laden with perishable foodstuff was said to be coming from the north through the Ugwogo end of the Opi-Enugu bypass when it was blocked and set ablaze by yet to be identified persons.
Eyewitnesses recall that distress calls were sent to the State Fire Service prompting a quick response by the Ogui Road fire service station to the scene.
The PPRO Enugu Police Command, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, while not confirming the incident, however, promised to get back to our correspondent when he was contacted for comments.
However, military helicopters have been hovering in the area in the hope of tracking the arsonists and further beef up security.
