The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed that it is investigating the allegation levelled against the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu over drug trafficking conviction by a US court.
An official of the antidrug agency who spoke with New National Star in confidence assured that the outcome of the investigation would be made public very soon.
Social media handle, Twitter, went agog in 2022 when United States District Court judgement from the Northern District of Illinois taking possession of Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s money over his involvement in drug trafficking surfaced.

The judgement docketed on July 26, 1993, and certified by Thomas O. Burton, the clerk of the court, indicted Tinubu for heroin trafficking in the state of Illinois through a proxy organisation owned by Adegboyega Mueez Akande and subsequently forfeited the proceeds of the crime to the U.S. government
Tinubu media handlers had reacted to the circulated document pointing out that the matter was dead as dodo.  Bayo Onanuga who spoke for  Tinubu described the allegation as campaign of calumny.
However, as the presidential campaign for the February 2023 election became heated the candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has called on the NDLEA to investigate the drug trafficking allegation hanging on Tinubu’s  head and drag him to court for his disqualification on ground of drug trafficking.
When the NDLEA spokesman, Mr. Femi Babafemi was contacted for his reaction, he did not pick his calls. After an SMS was sent to him, he replied that he would call soon. He did not call back as promised . When his phone was dialled again, it was switched off.
The official who reacted to the issue ,explained that it was not that the NDLEA was sleeping on the matter. He noted that the antidrug agency was investigating the matter. According to him;
“We are not sleeping on it. We do not sleep on any allegation at all. It is too early to come up with the result but I think when you speak with the spokesperson, he will be in the right position to tell you situation of things. What you are saying involves international institutions so, its not something to rush.
“Some of us have also worked in international police organisations, some investigations can take as much as five to six years. This one is not something you’ll just rush. But I think the spokesperson will be in a better position to give you the details”.
