Yamal, Raphinha shine as Barcelona defeats Benfica to advance to Champions League quarterfinals

In the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 match on Tuesday, Barcelona crushed Benfica 3-1, with two goals from Raphinha and a spectacular goal from Lamine Yamal. With a 4-1 aggregate victory, Barcelona advanced to the quarterfinals.

Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Germany, Barca will play the victor of the match between Lille and Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

Yamal, who was practically unplayable as he ran up and down the right channel and created the majority of Barca’s scoring opportunities, had an outstanding evening.

With a fantastic solo move in the eleventh minute, the 17-year-old Spain winger left two opponents on the ground and crossed for the Brazil team, giving Raphinha the lead.

Two minutes later, Benfica responded with a header from a corner by Nicolas Otamendi, but Barca continued to apply pressure as Yamal proved to be a nightmare for Benfica left back Samuel Dahl, who was unable to stop the Spanish teenager.

Before he eventually gave the home team the lead again in the 28th minute, Yamal set up chances for Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo and missed with a low shot from the edge of the box.

Before launching a twisting left-footed shot into goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin’s top-right corner, he cut inside and beat a confused Dahl.

According to ESPN, Yamal broke Breel Embolo’s record with Basel against Ludogorets in 2014 by 22 days, becoming him the youngest player to score and assist in the same Champions League match at the age of 17 years and 241 days.
