Zamfara government, WAEC reach settlement on N1.4 billion exam fee debt.

A payment arrangement has been agreed upon by Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to settle the outstanding N1.4 billion examination fees from previous state administrations.

The governor also succeeded in getting the withheld WAEC results of Zamfara Secondary School pupils released.

Because the state government failed to pay the N1.4 billion in examination fees, WAEC withheld the student’s results.

According to a statement released by the governor of Zamfara’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the governor met on Monday at his Abuja office with the Council’s leadership.

The Director of WAEC Nigeria’s national office, Dr. Amos J. Dangut, and Chairman of the Administrative and Finance Committee, Hajiya Binta Abdulkadir, headed the WAEC delegation, according to the announcement.

The Governor, along with the Honorable Commissioner of Education, Science, and Technology, Mallam Wadatau Madawaki, discussed with WAEC officials the outstanding debt owed by the Zamfara state on examinations conducted under previous administrations. This was part of the present administration’s effort to ensure that the state of emergency declared on education is seriously addressed, he said.

“The results of the West African Examination for the impacted students were not released for a number of years due to the non-payment of WAEC fees.”

As a result, many students have chosen not to take part in the National Youth Service Corp program, which is required, since their results have not been collected.

The statement further said that WAEC and the Zamfara State Government have agreed on a course of action for resolving the problem.

“The examination body decided to make the prior results available and permit Zamfara students to take the WAEC Exams in 2024 at the conclusion of the meeting.

The delayed results will be made public before the end of this month, as agreed upon by the State administration and WAEC about the repayment of backlog debt.

Senior representatives from WAEC Nigeria were also present at the meeting, including the Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Ambrose Okelezo, the Director of Finance, Mr. Victor C. Odu, and the Deputy Director, Mr. Segun U. Jerumeh.
