An early morning fire outbreak on Monday destroyed properties worth millions in a two-storey building located at No 7 Chiene Street, Achara Layout, Enugu, the Enugu State capital.
This is coming barely ten days after a mentally challenged lady set a two-storey building on fire at Bigard Seminary Avenue, Uwani, Enugu.
No life was lost in the latest inferno, which The Nation gathered occurred around 7.00am while residents were still beginning to observe the usual Monday’s sit-at-home.
A source in the area said the fire affected the last floor of the building and would have spread to the adjoining buildings but for the alarm raised by the residents, leading to the arrival of the firefighters who brought the situation under control immediately.
A neighbour, who witnessed the incident, Hon. Chika Nzelu commended the Enugu firefighting men for responding promptly, saying their quick intervention saved other adjoining buildings.
Leader of the Enugu fire Service team, Mr. Chukwuma Ugwuaneke, said firefighters fought gallantly to quench the fire when they got to the scene.
He said: “We got a distress emergency call from residents of this area this morning alerting us that there was a fire outbreak at # 7 Chiene street.
“On receiving the call, we immediately mobilized our men and fire engine to the scene. And we thank God that we were able to control and extinguished the fire at the point we met it.”
