The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, has set up a special monitoring team, saddled with the responsibilities of identifying, arresting and prosecuting those behind what he called undemocratic acts.
This was contained in a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP ODIKO MacDON on Monday, where the police Commissioner is said to have been dismayed and miffed at the attitude of some suspected Political Stakeholders, especially as it pertains to the 2023 general elections campaigns.
He said: “Some unscrupulous Persons have left the acceptable norms of politics and are now involved in campaigns of calumny, destruction and defacing of opponents Billboards and Posters. This is not a true reflection of what acceptable democratic tenets stands for.
“The trend the CP noted cannot be allowed to become a new normal. For the avoidance of doubt, the Commissioner of Police has set up a special monitoring Team, saddled with the responsibilities of identifying, arresting and prosecuting those behind these undemocratic acts.”
According to the release, the CP has however assured all Political Parties and Stakeholders of a level playing ground and has warned those involved in these acts of political sabotage to desist forthwith.
Meanwhile, in furtherance to the Akwa Ibom State Government approved environmental Beautification policy, members of the public have been advised to note that pasting of posters on roundabouts, kerbs and other government facilities is prohibited.
According to a statement by the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Solid Minerals, Charles Udoh KJSI, all political parties and candidates standing elections for their respective parties are advised to educate their supporters to adhere to this directive, that offenders will be apprehended and prosecuted in line with the extent laws of Akwa Ibom State irrespective of affiliations.
