Breaking News: Security Threat Forces Indefinite Closure Of MKO Abiola National Stadium

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced the indefinite closure of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, following a security threat communicated by the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters.

In an official security notice issued on Monday night, the Commission directed the immediate closure of all entrances to the stadium with effect from August 3, 2026, stating that the restriction would remain in force until further directives are received from the Police Headquarters.

The closure affects all users of the facility, including athletes, football clubs, fitness enthusiasts and members of the public who regularly use the stadium for sporting and recreational activities.

A visit to the stadium by New National Star Sports on Tuesday revealed that virtually all gates leading into the complex were under lock and key, with only the main entrance left open for security operations.

The stadium was under heavy security, with trucks belonging to the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies strategically positioned around the premises, while armed security personnel maintained strict surveillance to enforce the closure.

Security operatives were also deployed around the facility to prevent unauthorised access and ensure public safety. Members of the public were advised to stay away from the stadium and comply fully with directives issued by security agencies.

Sources familiar with the development told New National Star Sports that the closure followed intelligence reports of a planned protest by an unidentified group that had earlier requested permission to use the stadium facilities. The request was reportedly declined by the management over security concerns.

Although authorities confirmed that the shutdown was prompted by a credible security threat, they declined to provide further details, describing the action as a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding lives and property while security agencies assess the situation and prevent any possible breach of security.

The NSC assured the public that further updates would be communicated as soon as additional information is received from the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters.
Regular users of the stadium have been advised to monitor the Commission’s official communication channels for announcements regarding the reopening of the facility.
