IAEA chief ahead of Tehran visit – US-Iran nuclear deal: Diplomatic solutions urgently needed

Ahead of new nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States, Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA, has announced preparations to visit Tehran this week.

As tensions over Tehran’s nuclear program increase, Grossi is anticipated in the Iranian capital on Wednesday.

“At a time when diplomatic solutions are desperately needed, continued engagement and cooperation with the Agency will be essential,” Grossi said on X.

The visit coincides with increased Western concerns over the potential development of nuclear weapons due to Iran’s continued production of near-weapons-grade uranium and its lack of cooperation with IAEA inspectors.
In 2018, Iran started to rescind its obligations under the 2015 nuclear agreement after former US President Donald Trump withdrew from it.

By threatening military force if Iran does not curtail its nuclear activities, Trump has rekindled tensions.

Iran and the United States began indirect talks on Saturday in Muscat, Oman, despite their tense past. Both parties described the negotiations as “respectful and constructive.”

Rome will host the following round on Saturday.

According to the ANSA news agency, Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani acknowledged, “Iran, the U.S., and Oman made a corresponding request, and we have given a positive response.”
