UK PM Faces Pressure Over Man City Comments

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is facing growing scrutiny over comments he made concerning Manchester City following the club’s guilty verdict in the Premier League’s financial rules case.

He said several Premier League clubs have reportedly expressed concern over Burnham’s remarks, with senior figures questioning whether his comments could create an impression of political interference in an independent disciplinary process.

Burnham stated that he would be “really concerned” if Manchester City’s owners decided to sell the club following the verdict.

The comments reportedly surprised senior officials at rival Premier League clubs, who questioned the motive behind the prime minister’s intervention.

Downing Street has since clarified that Burnham believes nobody should be “above the rules”.
However, his remarks have continued to attract attention, particularly because Manchester City’s appeal against the verdict is yet to be heard.

The case was considered by an independent commission following a 42-day hearing in 2024. The commission subsequently found Manchester City guilty of financial-rule breaches, while a separate hearing to determine possible sanctions is still pending.

Manchester City has denied wrongdoing and is expected to challenge the commission’s findings before an independent appeal board.

The controversy has also revived questions about Burnham’s relationship with Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi ownership during his tenure as mayor of Greater Manchester.
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has called for details of meetings between Burnham and senior figures linked to Manchester City to be made public.
